Abstract

The paper pulp industry uses different production methods depending on the desired type of paper and on the available resources. In the past, the only method used to produce pulp was through mechanical abrasion and the application
of chemical processes based on caustic soda, sulfites and sulfates. Nowadays, the mechanical and kraft chemical methods (based on the use of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide) are ones of the most common processes to produce pulp.
The purpose of this paper is to generate accurate data on the operational and investment costs, necessary for the production of pulp through these methods, which are essential in the optimization of the supply chain.
Firstly, for each case, all activities included in the production process, are studied in detail, considering also the resources that are used. Based on this, the costs equations of those resources are proposed and then, obtained results are analyzed.
