At the beginning of the century the development of performance-based design methods for structures under seismic action begins, highlighting among them the direct design method based on displacements (DDBD). This method characterizes the non-linear behavior of a structure subjected to seismic action by means of an equivalent linear system of a degree of freedom, where the concept of equivalent viscous damping (EVD) is used to represent the non-linear behavior, as well as all sources of elastic and inelastic energy dissipation in the structure. The AVE has its beginnings at the beginning of the last century and with the advent of the DDBD, numerical and experimental studies have been carried out to approximate the linear behavior of the structure. This article presents the main advances of the AVE, different hysteresis cycles are approached, and characteristic of various structural typologies, it is concluded that it is an open topic especially in the experimental part.
