Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is a versatile matrix for developing solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for lithium-ion batteries. Its architecture contains ether groups within the polymer backbone, which promote coordination with lithium ions, thereby enhancing ionic mobility and improving the ionic conductivity of the material.
In this work, a WPU was synthesized and SPEs were subsequently prepared by incorporating lithium chloride (LiCl) at different concentrations into the polymer matrix. The obtained materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
The SPE sample containing 10 wt% LiCl exhibited the best performance, achieving an ionic conductivity of 2.82 × 10-7 S cm-1 at 25 °C, which is considered an adequate value for LiCl-based SPE systems.
