Abstract

The heat generated by the welding arc breaks the hydrogen bonding (H) of the molecules of the surrounding atmosphere, releasing two hydrogen atoms per dissociation. The introduction thereof in the weld metal is mainly attributed
to the absorption of these atoms entering into the metal net. In this paper, coupons of SMAW welds were performed using both dry and high-humidity electrodes. Also electrolytic hydrogen charging on tensile specimens constructed from welded joints with dry electrode were made to simulate aggressive conditions of H entry.
