The aim of this paper is to present a characterization of a hot rolled low carbon wire rod (6.40 mm diameter) for further cold drawing. During cooling, the product have been subjected to different coiling temperatures by Stelmor. Samples of the pearlitic-ferritic steel, were characterized by different microscopy techniques. It is important to determine the impactof the thermal history on the steel and in the scale generated on the product surface. It is known that an increased in the scale thickness involves a metalic performance loss. The phase’s volume fraction, grain size and microhardness of the steel, were measured. In addition, the scale phases were identified in order to establish the optimum descaling process. Furthermore, the layers thicknesses of the scale are measured. The scale phases present were corroborated by the Electron Backscatter Diffraction technique (EBSD).
