Abstract

A fuel cell is a device to convert directly the chemical energy of a fuel into electricity. Its performance depends on different parameters such us the thickness of the proton exchange membrane, the water content and the temperature of the cell. In order to study systematically how the variation of these parameters affect the performance of the cell a mathematical model of single pore is proposed and applied in simulating the experimental curves that show the variation of the cell potential when current is drained. It is noticed that the variation of the moisture content and the thickness of the proton exchange membrane have a pronounced effect on the polarization curve unlike the operating temperature of the cell.
