Modified ferrites obtained from layered double hydroxides (LDH) were employed (Co2+ and/or Mg2+) as catalysts in the reaction of wet air oxidation (CWAO) of 5000 ppm phenol solution. Physicochemistrylly materials were characterized by various techniques. The analyzes suggest the formation of LDH structure in the precursor materials and the presence of modified ferrites of Co2+and Mg2+ in nanocrystals, dispersed on a matrix of MgO, in the calcinated materials. The catalytic tests were carried out at 300°C in a fixed bed reactor with continuous feed of the phenol solution under air flow. The results indicated that when it was used as catalyst the material synthesized with Co+2 10%, the convertion of phenol was achieved at 99.5%, with a reduction of TOC and COD near of 98% , suggesting nanocrystals of cobalt ferrite (CoFe_2O4) obtained in the calcined materials was active species in theCWAO process evaluated.
