Abstract

The use of hydrogels and silicones to build mammographic phantoms was investigated and it was concluded that it would be convenient to use certified quality silicone, such as Smooth On Inc. to simulate fibroglandular tissue, skin, fat, and tumors. A protocol was designed to use EcoflexTM Gel and some samples were made to begin characterizing it at X-ray energies for mammography. The objective will be to use this gel to replace the fibrous tissue of the breast and later other silicones will be characterized to simulate skin, fat and tumors.
