Abstract

This work shows a comparative study of the atmospheric corrosion between an urban and an industrial zone on carbon steel coupons, using the ASTM G50-10 Standard (2015) and ISO 9223 Standard (2012).The assembly of monitoring stations, the preparation of coupons that will be exposed to different levels of air pollution and their subsequent treatment to comparatively assess the effects of corrosion are described. Each monitoring station remains four years in each zone, and every four months three coupons are extracted for analysis. Through the results of a four-month period of measurements and projecting the rate of corrosion obtained at one year duration, it was observed that the one corresponding to the industrial zone is four times higher than that of the urban area, showing indications of the difference in atmospheric aggressiveness over Materials between both places.
