The objective of this research project is to develop strategies for the comprehensive utilization of residual biomass from the olive industry by producing functional biomaterials and energy vectors. These products will be evaluated for use in the remediation of contaminated water and in the context of sustainable energy production, within a circular economy framework, to address regional socioeconomic challenges. Samples of olive pits were collected from an olive-processing industry. A laboratory-scale pyrolysis system was designed and built under an inert N2 atmosphere, with recovery of bioliquids at -20°C. Preliminary tests confirmed the proper functioning of the pyrolysis system once it was commissioned. The resulting biocarbon is characterized using FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM-EDX, and TPD, and its capacity to remove arsenic, borates, nitrates, and polyphenols from aqueous matrices was evaluated. This study is currently in its initial stage of development.
