Abstract

Pedestrian mobility is a fundamental aspect in the development of sustainable cities. As cities grow, they face challenges related to traffic congestion, pollution, and improved quality of life. To manage and mitigate these harmful effects of mobility, the world is adopting new trends and good practices to promote safe and accessible pedestrian mobility. The following work, which is included in the PID-TVTCBFE0008072TC: "Design of strategies for the promotion of sustainable mobility in urban agglomerations", firstly describes the current trends on the promotion of pedestrian zones, accessible infrastructure, intermodality, applied technology and citizen participation. Secondly, the findings will be applied in a proposal for a decalogue of good practices to promote pedestrian mobility, especially focused on medium-sized cities, where urban planning priorities may differ from those of large cities. Implementing these trends and good practices in medium-sized cities will help create more pedestrian-friendly urban environments, reduce car dependency, improve air quality, promote healthy living, enhance social cohesion by facilitating interaction between residents and encourage economic activity in pedestrian areas.
