Abstract

An adequate design of the plant layout contributes to reduce costs and technological risks. In recent decades different layout optimization models based on mathematical programming have been proposed to minimize costs and/or risks (or constraining it). The common denominator of these formulations is that the internal design of the facilities is known prior to layout optimization. In this design sequence, a set of unassessed trade-offs arise that affect both total cost and risk. In this work, we seek to develop a general framework to optimize the internal design of the facilities simultaneously with the general plant layout. A general model in its GDP form is developed for this purpose. The simultaneous execution of both models is applied to a particular study case for the optimization of the LPG storage and the layout of a set of flammable substances in a tank farm.
