This work reports the investigation of the theoretical calculation of critical stress according to the criteria of the INTICIRSOC (2016) and Eurocode 5 (EN 1995-1-1 2005) regulations for the purpose of evaluating the level of safety provided by the procedures of calculation, and the first stage of tests aimed at determining the modulus of elasticity in glulam wood pieces of Populus deltoides, cultivated in the delta of the Paraná River, Argentina. For the design of compressed elements, according to the specifications of the Argentine Regulation of Wooden Structures INTI-CIRSOC 601 (2016), the lateral instability factor of the compressed member (Cp) is calculated, the determination of this factor is a function of the minimum modulus of elasticity. The INTI-CIRSOC 601 (2016) regulation also incorporates in its supplements reference values for the glulam wood beams of Populus deltoides. In this work, the value of the minimum modulus of elasticity proposed by this regulation has been compared with the experimental, and its incidence on the critical compression stress has been analyzed. The experimental results showed a minimum modulus of elasticity higher than that proposed by INTI-CIRSOC 601. This situation shows that the compressed elements of a structure are oversized if they are calculated with this regulation.
