Abstract

The construction industry faces the challenge of reducing its environmental impact through the incorporation of materials with lower embodied energy and a higher content of renewable resources. In this context, lignocellulosic agro-industrial residues represent an opportunity to develop biobased materials capable of partially replacing conventional products while promoting circular economy strategies and the valorization of regional by-products.
This doctoral research aims to develop and characterize composite materials for applications in architecture and design using lignocellulosic residues from different Argentine agro-industrial chains, including sugarcane bagasse, peanut shells, pruning residues, and other plant fibers combined with low-toxicity binders. The research includes the experimental design of formulations, evaluation of their physical, mechanical, thermal, and functional properties, and assessment of their environmental performance through Life Cycle Assessment methodologies.
The research is currently focused on the consolidation of its methodological framework, a critical review of the state of the art, the selection of raw materials, and the definition of experimental protocols for prototype manufacturing and characterization. In parallel, collaboration with specialized laboratories has been established to conduct standardized testing and to define strategies for future technology transfer.
The expected outcomes include the development of innovative biobased materials for non-structural architectural applications, contributing to the valorization of regional agro-industrial residues and expanding scientific knowledge in sustainable materials for architecture and design.
