Abstract

This work presents the development and validation of a numerical (1D) thermal model to simulate thermal interaction between polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and biological tissue. The model, implemented by means of finite element method, considers the exothermic reaction due to the PMMA reaction. To validate the model, in vitro experimental tests were carried out in which PMMA samples were exposed to biological tissue and the temporal evolution of temperature was measured. The experimental results showed good agreement with the numerical simulations, validating the ability of the model to predict the temperature distribution in the PMMA-fabric system. The results obtained in this study provide a valuable tool to evaluate the thermal impact of PMMA on the surrounding tissues.
