Abstract

An improvement that can be applied on vertical axis wind turbines consists in adding a vertical flap en end of its blades. Computational simulations made with a hybrid RANS-LES model show that implementing this positively affects the power generation capacity of the turbine. To test these results, we built wind turbines with 3D printing and studied their behavior in a wind tunnel. We observed that flaps have a negative influence over the rotor performance, decreasing their power generating capacity.
