This study investigates digital transformation in SMEs within the context of Industry 4.0. An innovative mechanism based on the Reference Architecture Model Industrie 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) is introduced to identify areas with high digitalization potential. The mechanism relies on two key parameters: subjective accounting weighting and digitalization level. Subjective accounting weighting assesses the importance and cost impact of each business area. The digitalization level is measured through a specific questionnaire.Through a case study in operations, this mechanism demonstrates how it can pinpoint areas with significant digitalization potential in SMEs. This approach provides an effective tool for SMEs to make informed strategic decisions on their path to digital transformation. Future validation across various sectors and types of SMEs promises a substantial enhancement of the proposal.
