Abstract

In Argentina, between 85% and 90% of grain transport is carried out by trucks. If we take into account a national production estimated in about 140 millions of tons, that volume equals 4.2 million trucks. Although there are many chambers and federations which form and publish reference guiding values regarding cost per kilometer of grain transport, which are considered sources of consultation, in practice, the parts end up negotiating rates. This paper is based on the quantification and analysis of the cost structure of transporting grains in trucks. The total cost, the cost per ton and the cost per kilometer are determined, as representatives of a reference model. It is also shown, for different annual use of the truck, how the costs evolve, and how profit margin varies, between these and the reference rate.
