Abstract

This research endeavor was grounded in the application of knowledge acquired within the Operations Research department at UTN La Plata. It represents a pioneering effort in utilizing diverse operations research techniques to devise an optimal bus route that caters to the distinct requirements of students and faculty at UTN La Plata, duly considering their class schedules and travel patterns. The primary objective was to enhance the efficiency of public transportation for this specific academic community.
To attain this goal, comprehensive data pertaining to class schedules and mobility patterns of current UTN La Plata constituents was collected. Employing exploratory data analysis, mapping and advanced mathematical modeling methodologies, travel patterns and transportation needs were discerned.
Subsequently, optimization algorithms were applied to conceptualize a novel bus route that maximizes coverage and frequency during peak demand periods for individuals commuting to and from the institution. Concomitantly, seamless intermodal connectivity with other public transportation systems was considered. In addition, factors such as distance traveled, detection of restrictions and travel times were considered to offer a practical and efficient solution.
This inaugural study on the application of mathematical modeling and data analysis yielded a comprehensive delineation of requisites, culminating in the formulation of a tailored bus route finely attuned to UTN La Plata's class schedules and user behaviors. Such an approach underscores the paramount significance of operations research in the development of bespoke and resource-efficient public transportation systems for distinct cohorts of users. Future work is expected based on the simulation of routes and the implementation of real-time records related to urban mobility patterns in the region.
